Apart from the groundbreaking NASA clean air study, there have been many clinical trials and studies in previous years that validate the claim that certain houseplants are very effective in curbing down the ill effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) Benzene, Trichloroethylene, Formaldehyde, and Toluene.

A study conducted at Paharpur Business Centre and Software Technology Incubator Park, Delhi, India, in the year 2008, found that several popular indoor plants are quite effective in cleaning indoor air quality. They took these plant species:

These plants were tested for close to 15 years at the Paharpur Business Centre and Software Technology Incubator Park in New Delhi. The points considered were daytime metabolic carbon dioxide absorption, nighttime metabolic CO absorption, volatile organic compound, and inorganic gas absorption/removal for air cleaning.


What Makes this Study So Significant

The Paharpur Business Centre and Software Technology Incubator Park in New Delhi was 20 years old and spanned 50,000 square feet with 1200 indoor plants and 300 workers. After the completion of the study, it was observed that the building has the cleanest and healthiest indoor air in Delhi compared to other buildings. Not only that but it was also found:

  • 50-52% of reported reduction in eye irritation
  • 35-36% reduction in respiratory problems
  • 25-26% reduction in headache
  • 10-12% reduction in lung impairment
  • 9-10% reduction in asthma problems
  • 15-20% reduction in energy costs as the plants reduced outside air infiltration
  • Worker productivity increased by 20-24% as the plants helped in increased blood-oxygen levels, which ultimately resulted in fewer sick days

Why You Must Be Growing these Plants

All of these houseplants are easy to maintain, add a character to the indoor space, and offer so many potential benefits, which means you just can’t go wrong while including them in your houseplant collection.


Caveat: Some of these houseplants might be mildly toxic to pets. If you have a cat or dog that loves to nibble plant leaves, do thorough research before bringing one of these to your home!
