Location

Philodendron Brasil displays the best variegation in its foliage in bright but indirect sunlight. Avoid keeping the plant in the shade as it will fade its colors. Also, do not expose it to the harsh direct sun as it can burn the leaves.

Soil

Go for a growing medium that drains well while retaining enough moisture for the plant. Pick a potting mix that’s rich in organic matter. Also, adding some compost to the soil would be a great idea. You can also mix perlite for better drainage.

Watering

You should always let the top 2-3 inches of the soil dry out before watering the plant again. As this tropical houseplant is very sensitive to overwatering, do not keep the soil soggy as it will result in rot.

Reduce watering during winter as the plant enters a somewhat inactive growth stage.

Temperature

It is best to grow the plant in a temperature range of 70-80°F or 21-26°C. Maintain a room temperature between 55-60°F or 12-15°C during the night.

Humidity

Brasil loves to grow in warm, humid spaces. Keep the humidity level maintained between 50-60 percent. If you live in a drier zone, keep its pot on a pebble tray filled with water.

Philodendron Brasil Care

Fertilizer

If you are using a high-quality and rich potting mix, then you don’t have to worry much about feeding the plant. To boost the growth, use a balanced liquid fertilizer during spring and early summer, once in 4-5 weeks. Dilute the feed to 1/4 of its strength.

Avoid fertilizing the plant in winters as it enters a dormant stage.

Pruning

Prune the plant in early summer and spring to keep the stems in good shape and eliminate any yellow or damaged leaves. This will help the plant to grow fuller leaves during the active season.

Pests & Diseases

Spider mites, mealybugs, thrips, and scales can pose problems as they feed on the plant’s foliage. Use rubbing alcohol or apply insecticidal liquid soaps and neem oil spray to get rid of them.

Avoid overwatering at all costs as it can cause root rot.

  • Curling Leaves: It indicates that the plant is not receiving enough water. Make sure the growing medium is moist and water the plant when the topsoil feels a bit dry.
  • Browning Tips: It can be due to dry conditions or excess sunlight. Check for air vents and keep the plant away from such drafts. Provide extra humidity using a humidifier or a pebble tray. Move the plant immediately to a spot that receives filtered light.
