1. Choose the Right Variety

While all varieties of pothos grow well in different types of containers, the best ones for hanging baskets depend entirely on your preferences and the type of space you have.

If your home is dimly lit or you have a window that doesn’t get much sun, go with plants with bright or light-patterned foliage that pops out in shadows. Varieties like Neon pothos, Manjula, Snow Queen, or Lemon Lime work well for this. And if you have a sunny home, deep-hued ones like Golden Pothos, Jade, and Baltic Blue add plenty of color and contrast.

But the above choices are from an aesthetic point of view; if you’re ever confused, have a low-light space, or have too much sun, going with a classic golden pothos never goes wrong.

Size matters, too! Varieties like Marble Queen are ideal for smaller baskets, while larger ones like Golden Pothos, Hawaiian, and Jessenia are better suited for big-hanging planters.

2. Get a Good Basket

Right basket for hanging pothos

Obviously, you want the hanging basket to look pretty but do consider other practical aspects as well. The ideal basket should provide adequate space for root growth while complementing your plant’s size and style.

For smaller pothos varieties, a compact hanging basket with a diameter of 8 inches is sufficient. This will allow the plant to develop without becoming root-bound.

However, for larger varieties, make sure your container has a diameter of 10-12 inches or more. This provides ample space for the plant’s vigorous growth and prevents overcrowding.

Pro Tip: Pothos loves well-draining and occasionally dry soil. Ensure that the hanging basket has enough holes at the bottom to allow free seepage of excess water.

3. Giving it the Right Care

Once you have chosen the variety and the pot, half the work is done. You just have to plant your pothos in the growing basket and start caring for it.

Hanging the basket in a location where it can receive moderate to bright indirect light will help it grow well. If hung outdoors, shelter the plant from strong and dry winds. It prefers slight humidity, and therefore, misting it regularly helps.

Allow the soil to dry out between watering sessions. In hanging baskets, especially indoors, fertilization is not essential. However, feeding it supplements once a month during its active growing period—spring to late summer—will help amend poor soil conditions. You can also try these DIY pothos fertilizers.

4. Pruning your Pothos

Our next trick to unlocking full foliage potential while growing pothos in hanging baskets is pruning. In certain varieties, like Golden pothos, the vines grow a bit too quickly, therefore flowing to abnormal lengths off the edge of the container. In such cases, trim the extra foliage or stem to maintain its shape and promote healthier growth.

The best time to prune is growing actively, as the plant can easily recover and sprout new growth in this period.

Here’s how to prune pothos so they grow better.

5. Multiple Cuttings in the Same Basket

Now, this step is perfect if you’re in a hurry to get a lush, bouncy hanging basket full of pothos but are too impatient to wait for it to grow. Plant multiple cuttings around the circumference of your hanging basket to instantly fill up space.

These cuttings will quickly grow into healthy, mature plants and give you a lush and packed pothos hanging basket.
