Carbonated Water for Plants might sound a little surprising, but this fizzy drink can benefit your green friends in significant ways!

The use of carbonated water for plants has been proved beneficial in many studies. Read more about carbonated water and its applications in this article.

What is Carbonated Water?

Carbonated water, also known as seltzer water, is a product of infusing water and CO2 under high pressure, creating tiny bubbles that make it sparkling or fizzy. This process is referred to as carbonation.

Why Use Carbonated Water for Plants?

Carbonated water is expensive as compared to plain water, but using it in the garden can nourish your plants effectively. For better results, make sure it is sugar-free. It also contains essential elements, such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, that work on building a cellular framework of plants.

The sodium content in the sparkling water is the primary catalyst for the vital metabolic processes.

Since it has many plant nutrients such as sodium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus, carbonated water might be beneficial as roots soak up these nutrients quickly. Also, the carbon content in it helps the plant to grow rapidly and boosts drought resistance, as the plant can conserve more water in the presence of a higher amount of CO2.

Note: Avoid using sugary, flavored, and low-calorie soda in your garden as it cannot support plants and could be harmful in high doses.

How to Use Carbonated Water for Plants?

  • Mix it with water in a 50:50 ratio before the application.
  • For the vigorous growth of the plants, it should drip in the soil slowly. This will provide the plant enough time to take advantage of nutrients and CO2.
  • Bring the solution to the room temperature, since chilled water can stun the plant roots and restrict the plant growth.
  • Apply carbonated water around the base of your plant, avoid wetting the foliage.
  • It has been mentioned in Reader’s Digest that a weekly regimen of carbonated water proposes many benefits to your plant’s health.
  • However, there are not many sources to validate this claim. Therefore, we suggest you try it once or twice on your plant to observe the favorable results.
  • The nutrients, minerals, and extra CO2 in the soda water promotes the plant growth in the growing season.

Drawbacks of Using Flavored Carbonated Water

If carbonated or any water, you are using for plants, contains salt or sugar, then it will change the osmotic potential, making it difficult for roots to soak water. As the sweetened soda water also invites arthropods like ants; they attack the roots, and spread the fungal infection and other diseases.
