Origin

This easy-to-grow plant is native to Mexico and some parts of South America. From there, it was relocated to the United States, South Africa, Singapore, West Indies, Malaysia, Australia, and China. Today it’s grown everywhere in the world for ornamental and amenity purposes.

Arrowhead remains green throughout the year and thrives well in bright, indirect sunlight in a warm location. You can easily grow it in both soil and water.

Growing Arrowhead in Water

For propagating the Arrowhead plant in water, you will need to take stem cuttings from a healthy plant. If you don’t have this already, buy it online or from a plant nursery. After getting the plant, follow the steps given below:

• Find a healthy stem and snip off several cuttings just below the node.
• The size of the cuttings will depend on the size of your vase–leaves should come out of the container, as shown in the above picture.
• Remove the bottom leaves from the stem cuttings.
• Plant the cuttings in a large glass jar or a vase filled with non-chlorinated water.
• Water level in the vase must not be too high that it starts touching the leaves.
• Position the cuttings so that they remain upright, and atleast 2-3 nodes submerge in water.

Within 7-14 days, you will see new roots emerging from the cuttings. If you follow the care tips in this article, you can keep them forever in the water or transplant them into the soil.

Arrowhead Plant Care in Water

Location

Place a glass jar where the plant can get bright, indirect sunlight and warmth. A window sill or tabletop is a good location for growing arrowhead vine in water. In any case, avoid direct sun exposure as it’ll result in burned and bleached leaves.

The plant also does quite well in a shaded location and is a great choice for someone who is looking for a replacement for a lucky bamboo plant.

Change Water Often

Change the water every 4-7 days to keep the plant fresh and thriving. Your water should be free from salt and chlorine. Also, avoid using too hot or cold water as it can harm your plant. If you’re using tap water, dechlorinate it by allowing it to sit in an open container for 24 hours.

Note: Use a transparent glass jar for growing Arrowhead in water. In this way, you can keep a check on the water level, color, and overall root development of the plant.

Fertilizer

If you have a fish aquarium in your home, use its water to feed this plant. Every time you change the water, mix 1/3 part aquarium water in your regular freshwater and refill the vase with it. This solution will make the plant lush and green.

If you don’t have it, use a balanced liquid fertilizer once in 1 or 2 months to encourage healthier growth. Add 1/2 or 1 teaspoon in 2 gallons of water!

Some Additional Care Tips

Aerial Roots

This plant will develop aerial roots in order to draw up water and nutrients. If you notice a brown outer layer of the roots floating in the water, it is normal, and you can remove that while changing the water.
