Studies that Prove How Lantana is Effective Against Mosquitoes

Study -1

In one study in 2013, the enquirers took this plant to bring down the Malaria numbers. They took plant samples and made various concoctions containing methanol, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and diethyl ether. Using these samples and solvents, they extracted the fumes of the plant.

The results from this study show that the plant Lantana Camara is effective in repelling Anopheles mosquitoes for over 300 minutes. This was an outstanding achievement in the development of safe organic repellants to control the transmission of malaria.

Another research paper published in the Journal PLoS ONE (Public Library of Science) gives scientific proof that Lantana works to deter mosquitoes. This ensures that everybody has a more sustainable and cheaper alternative to vaccines. This study was also an absolute success to show that we can use Lantana as a powerful mosquito repellant.

By the end of this study, researchers had data from about 231 houses with lantana screens and 90 houses without screens. Those with well-growing screens had significantly lesser mosquitos caught in traps compared to the non-flowering homes.

How to Use Lantana to Repel Mosquitoes

To start preventing mosquitoes, growing these plants at home are the best way to go! Since it’s a weed, its growth is rapid, and you can easily plant it in pots.

• When you are outside, crush the leaves, and this will exude a citronella smell that will keep the insects away.
• Another method is to dry the flowers and leaves. Once dry, crush them into a powder form and burn them in a glass jar. This will keep mosquitoes away for about 3-4 hours due to the smell, and those that feed on the plant will be weaker, with a shorter life span.
• You can also get lantana essential oil and mix 4-5 drops of it in 2 spoons full of coconut or jojoba oil and rub it on the exposed parts of your body. Its smell will ensure that mosquitoes stay far from you!
