Propagating Pearls and Jade Pothos

The best way to propagate Pearls and Jade Pothos is through cuttings.

  • Take 5-7 inches long cuttings from a healthy plant.
  • Remove the bottom leaves, dip the end of the cutting in a rooting hormone, and plant it in well-draining soil or water. One advantage of growing them in water is to let you grow the pothos hydroponically that cuts down the risk of root rot. Do change the water in 3-5 days.
  • Keep the cutting where it gets bright indirect light.
  • The cutting will form roots in 2-4 weeks.

Sunlight

The plant does best in bright and indirect light. An east-facing location where the plant gets the direct and mild morning sun for 2-4 hours will be the best. Avoid keeping the plant in the harsh afternoon sun for long hours.

Soil

Being an easy to care plant, it will be more than happy to thrive in all types of soil. For best growth, however, use a good-quality potting mix designed for houseplants. If you want to make your own potting mix, then we have a great article on it here.

Watering

Always remember to not overwater your Pearls and Jade plant as root rot could be one of the main reasons for its death. Let the topsoil dry out a bit before you water the plant again. Also, misting its leaves every once in a while is also a good idea.

Temperature

This plant cannot tolerate frost and grows best in USDA Zones 9-12 and does best in the temperature range of 65-95 F or 18-35 C.

Fertilizer

The plant will take care of its own, so you don’t have to worry much about feeding it. However, to give it an additional boost in growth, you can use a balanced fertilizer once in 5-6 weeks. Do follow the instructions on the label.

Humidity

As it is a tropical plant, it loves a higher humidity level, so an occasional misting would work for the plant. You can also keep its pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water.

Pruning

Pruning your Pearls and Jade pothos once in a while will keep making them look healthy, beautiful, and fuller. Also, snip off dead and damaged leaves from time to time.

Pests & Diseases

While growing this plant, keep an eye on mealybugs and aphids. Use insecticidal soap to knock them away. To keep most of the potential diseases at bay, avoid overwatering the plant and keep it at an airy location.

This pretty pothos plant could add charm to your workspace at the office or a living room in the home. It is also popular to bring in good fortune to the house when kept as a houseplant.

Pearls and Jade also look amazing when made to grow in hanging baskets, terrariums, vivariums, or floor containers with some support or moss pole.

Toxicity

The plant is mildly toxic for humans and pets due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it at a spot where it is away from pets and kids. However, there’s nothing to worry about as it only causes a slight irritation to the mouth and skin if ingested.
