Scientifically termed magnesium sulfate, the chemical formula of Epsom Salt is MgSO₄, but it also comes in a hydrated form – MgSO₄·7H₂O.

As we all know, magnesium is a crucial element in chlorophyll, which is vital in every plant to perform photosynthesis. If there is an insufficient supply of magnesium, it can result in the yellowing of leaves and drooping foliage.

Epsom salt application (rich in magnesium) promotes green and healthier plants. As it is also a good source of sulfur, this compound produces vital enzymes and vitamins and supplements amino acids and proteins.

  1. The most significant advantage of Epsom salt is its ease of use! Add 1-2 tablespoons in a gallon of water, stir well, and use the solution as a foliar spray or water the plants once a month.
  2. For plants like pothos, fiddle leaf figs, spider plants, and philodendrons – foliar spray will promote chlorophyll growth, resulting in greener leaves.
  3. For flowers, add the solution to the soil – magnesium is excellent for the growth of flower pigments, helping develop healthy blooms. It also improves the overall color of the blossoms!
  4. You can also use Epsom salt for seedlings – add it to the sprayer bottle (same ratios as mentioned above) and give a light spritz occasionally for a speedy growth process!
  5. If you don’t want to go through the hassles of mixing it in the water, don’t worry. I have an easy method – sprinkle a tablespoon of it at the base of the plant occasionally. It will seep into the soil every time you water!
  6. If you are growing indoor plants in water – add a pinch of Epsom salt in every 3rd or 4th water change for better growth and longer flowers.

  • Palms: These plants love magnesium; using this compound will reduce the chance of yellowing leaves.
  • Tomatoes and Peppers (Indoor Varieties): Its application will result in better fruiting and healthier growth.
  • Roses: Miniature roses benefit from their application, producing more vibrant flowers.
  • Ferns and Leafy Greens: Promotes greener foliage in Ferns or leafy vegetables, thanks to the improved chlorophyll production.
  • Orchids: Using it as a foliar spray can make the flowers last longer.

Do note that it will work with all the plants you grow indoors, including plain green foliage and variegated ones.
