Rudraksha Tree Information

Also popular as the Praying bead plant, Rudraksha is a broad-leaf, large, evergreen tree with a cylindrical trunk. Dried seeds from this tree are used for prayer beads in Hinduism and Buddhism.

Its fruits are conical in shape and are 1-2 cm in diameter. The outer cover of its seeds has a blue hue, which gives it another popular name—blueberry beads. This easy-to-grow tree blooms from October to December and displays yellow flowers.

Fact: The name implies Rudra’s tear drop in Sanskrit.

You can easily grow the plant using cuttings or seeds. However, these can be time-consuming, so it would be a good idea to get a well-grown plant from a garden center and transplant it into the garden. The only thing you need to be careful of is to pick a spot that gets atleast 5-6 hours of direct sunlight every day.

Location

Grow the tree where it receives plenty of bright and direct sunlight. Do not pick a shaded spot, as it will stunt the growth while limiting the growth of fruits.

Note: Keep the plant safe from harsh afternoon sun exposure when it is young.

Soil

Rudraksha Tree is not fussy about the growing medium and will do just fine in the regular garden soil. For best growth, use a blend of coco peat and perlite.

Water

Water at the base of the trunk till the soil soaks it completely. Avoid watering the tree every day, and do it only when the topsoil feels a little dry to the touch.

Pruning

Remove yellow, brown, or broken leaves with pruners, and cut off diseased branches whenever you notice them. Also, pull weeds whenever you see them growing near the tree.
