If you want to add a Pachira aquatica in your collection using an existing plant that you loved, well, the steps are not as hard as you think!
When to Propagate a Money Tree?
Before you plan to propagate the plant, it is important to know the right time of the year to do it. The best time is when the weather is warm, i.e. spring or early summer. This is also the time when the plant actively grows.
How to Propagate a Money Tree?
1. Propagation from Stem Cuttings
Growing this plant from cuttings is probably the easiest way to propagate it!
Simply take a healthy stem section of about 6-7 inches from a young plant. Make sure the cutting has 2-4 nodes. Take away the lower leaves, leaving the top ones intact.
Now, plant the cutting in a well draining potting mix, water well, and cover it with a plastic bag, or dome to increase humidity. Keep the pot where it gets plenty of indirect light. The cutting will root in 4-6 weeks.
Note: You can also propagate the cutting in water. Put it in a vase filled with water, and keep it in in direct light. Change water once in 4-6 days, or whenever it becomes cloudy. The roots will form in a few weeks.
2. Propagation from Seeds
This will take the longest time, so we don’t usually recommend this method.
For this, get the plant’s seed from a garden centre, or source them online. Now, fill a pot with a seed starting mix, and sow the seeds at a depth of 1/4 of an inch.
Using a spray bottle, mist the growing medium, cover it with a plastic bag, and keep the pot where it gets plenty of sunlight. The seeds will sprout anywhere between 3-6 weeks.
Aftercare
- Water only when the topsoil feels a little dry to the touch. Refrain from over or under watering.
- The plant loves indirect light, but also appreciates a few hours of mild, morning sun exposure.
- Keep the humidity levels high. Either, keep its pot on a pebble tray filled with water, or use a humidifier.
