Can You Grow Aloe Vera from Pups?

When it comes to propagating aloe vera, you can grow it from seeds or leaf cuttings, and it takes a lot of time and patience to grow this plant from either of these methods.

So, what could be the best option? Simple! Multiply the plant by planting the pups that grow around it. It saves time–just take a moment, and you can have the exact copy of the parent plant in separate pots.

Step 1: Removing Pups from the Mother Plant

The most important part of the process is to remove the pups from the parent pot in which they are growing. The best aspect is you don’t have to wait too long, as the pups are all ready to get separated from the pot as early as they grow a few sets of strong leaves.

A mature aloe plant produces pups near its base, which you can easily remove to grow new plants.

  • Carefully take out the plant from the pot. Make sure you are not damaging the root ball in the process. You can tap the side of the planter to do so. If the plant is tightly embedded in the pot, then break it. The aim is to raise the whole mother plant along with roots while ensuring the pups remain intact.
  • After removing the plant from the planter, remove the pups using a sanitized knife with their roots intact.
  • Examine the roots and foliage, and remove dry or brown roots with a clean knife.
  • If you notice the pups having their roots entangled with the mother plant, then don’t pull them. Gently slice the part using a knife to free them.

Step 2: Re-potting Pups

  • You don’t have to wait for the pups to callus over before planting.
  • Take a small to medium-sized pot with drainage holes, and fill it with some well-draining potting mix.
  • Make a hole in the center of the soil and plant the pup. Fix it properly in place by tapping the growing medium gently around it.

Remember that overwatering can lead to root rot, so water the pups only when the growing medium feels dry to touch at the top. Make sure to keep the plant away from direct sunlight in this phase.

You don’t have to feed the plant at this stage. Wait until the new plant gets established and develops more roots. Till then, provide bright and indirect light, and soon you will see new growth.

  1. Buy mature aloe vera plants, as aged ones tend to produce more pups.
  2. Keep aloe vera in a pot-bound state. For this, grow the plant in small pots, and when the planter becomes full of roots, it will direct its energy into producing more pups.
  3. Place the plant where it receives enough light and warmth—these conditions will help the plant form more pups.
  4. Keep the aloe vera in a slightly stressed condition—water it less and keep it in direct sunlight for 5-6 hours every day.
