DIY Homemade Mosquito Repellant Ideas
1. Aloe Vera and Olive Oil
According to a study published in the International Journal of Mosquito Research, aloe vera gel and olive oil have a mosquito repellent property when mixed. The mixture can be prepared with different concentrations as per skin sensitivity keeping in mind the allergic reactions of the aloe vera gel.
The mixture not only protects the skin against mosquito bites but also keeps it soft and supple.
How it works:
Mixing 200ml of olive oil with 3 scoops of aloe vera gel works really well in protecting against the bites.
2. Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Mosquito Repellant
Take 10 ml lemon eucalyptus oil, and 100 ml carrier oil (coconut or olive oil) in a clean bowl. Mix distilled water and vodka into the solution to make it lighter.
How it works:
The components citronella and p-methane 3,8-diol (PMD) in lemon eucalyptus oil repel mosquitoes.
3. Tea Tree and Coconut Oil
Add 30 ml coconut oil and 10 drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle – their astringent property and strong scent repel mosquitoes for good.
How it works:
Tea tree oil is very effective in repelling mosquitoes. Coconut oil also repels mosquitoes and heal mosquito bites when applied topically.
4. Lemongrass and Rosemary Oil
Take a clean spray bottle, add 10 drops of lemongrass oil and 10 drops of rosemary oil. Mix 60 ml carrier oil (coconut or olive oil) with boiled water into a spray bottle.
How it works:
Lemongrass oil has limonene and citronella that deter mosquitoes. Rosemary oil contains eucalyptol, limonene, and camphor that work as a natural mosquito repellant.
5. Vanilla, Lemon Juice, and Lavender Oil
Mix 10-12 drops of lavender oil in 3-5 drops of vanilla extracts. Add 2-4 tablespoons of lemon juice to the solution and fill in a clean spray bottle with distilled water. Shake well before use.
How it works:
Lavender oil has linalool. eucalyptol, camphor, and limonene – all these compounds are natural mosquito repellants. Vanilla also works strongly against mosquitoes, and the acidic property of lemon juice keeps the bugs away.
6. Neem and Coconut Oil
Take 10 drops of neem oil, 30 ml of coconut oil, and boiled water, in a spray bottle. Mix well and use this natural mosquito repellant as per your need.
How it works:
Neem and coconut oil both are quite effective against repelling mosquitoes – when combined in the mentioned ratio, they work best in keeping mosquitoes away from your home.
7. Isopropyl Alcohol and Peppermint Essential Oil
Mix 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, lemon essential oil, peppermint essential oil, 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol, 3 oz water, and 3 oz witch hazel in a spray bottle. Shake well before use.
How it works:
The strong aroma of peppermint, lemon, and eucalyptus essential oil work well in deterring mosquitoes away.
8. Cinnamon Oil
Mix 2 teaspoon cinnamon oil and 2 ounces of water in a clean spray bottle. Shake well to blend the ingredients. Spray it on an open area of your body.

Cinnamon is potent in repelling mosquitoes and many insects. It can also kill mosquito eggs and also wards off adult mosquitoes.
9. Thyme Essential Oil
Mix 5 drops of thyme oil with 2 ounces of water. Fill this solution in a clean spray bottle.

10. Soybean Oil
Take 2 Teaspoon soybean oil, and mix a small amount of lemongrass oil into this mixture. This blend works great against repelling mosquitoes.

According to a study, soybean oil provides 1-4 hours of protection from mosquitoes.
11. Geranium and Rosemary Essential Oil Mosquito Repellant
Take 30 drops of geranium essential oil, 20 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil, 30 drops of citronella essential oil, 20 drops of lavender essential oil, 10 drops of rosemary essential oil. Add one tablespoon rubbing alcohol or vodka, 1/2 cup vinegar or water, 1/2 cup natural witch hazel. Combine these ingredients in a spray bottle.
How it works:
Above mentioned essential oils are potent against repelling mosquitoes.
Note: While mixing ingredients in a spray bottle, add essential oils first, mix water in the end, and shake properly.
12. Mouthwash and Epsom Salt Spray
Take a large bottle of mint-flavored mouthwash, 3 cups of Epsom Salt, and 12 oz of beer (optional). Mix the ingredients and spray around your home.
How it works:
Mouthwashes contain menthol, thymol, and eucalyptol that can deter mosquitoes. Epsom salt on the other hand also repels mosquitoes.
13. Baking Soda and Vinegar Trap
Take an empty bottle, cut it into half, add baking soda. Turn it upside-down, and place it on the bottom part so it will look like a funnel. Add vinegar to this and keep it outside your room.
How it works:
When baking soda and vinegar are mixed together, they release carbon dioxide that attracts mosquitoes to the mixture and kills them.
14. Garlic Spray
Mince 5-6 garlic cloves, add 1 tablespoon of mineral oil, and allow to soak overnight. Strain the solution in the morning and add lime juice and water to it. Spray it in the corners of your home.
How it works:
Garlic has a strong compound allicin, which acts as a mosquito repellant. The acidic composition of lemon juice boosts the repelling abilities of garlic.
15. Rubbing Alcohol Spray
Take 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol and 10 drops of any essential oil. Add 30 ml water and fill the solution into a spray bottle – spray on open areas of your body.

When essential oils are mixed with rubbing alcohol, they make an amazing combo that works best against repelling mosquitoes. Rubbing alcohol also cures mosquito bites.
16. Lantana
In one study in 2013, it was found that Lantana Camara is effective in repelling Anopheles mosquitoes for over 300 minutes. Another research paper published in the Journal PLoS ONE (Public Library of Science) gives scientific proof that Lantana works to deter mosquitoes.
