Looking for the Best Spots to Grow and show off the many varieties of Orchids in your home? Read on to find out!
From terrestrial ones that grow in soil to epiphytes that cling to surfaces and absorb moisture and nutrients from the air, different orchid varieties have diverse habitats and distinct needs. Here is the list of the best spots to grow orchids based on the type!
Places Where Orchids Thrive
How do you choose the best place to keep your orchid? It’s pretty easy! Just follow their care needs! Your orchids will flourish best when they receive bright, indirect light for 6-12 hours daily. They can get this light on east—or south-facing windowsills that receive gentle morning sunlight without being exposed to the harsh afternoon sun.
If you give them a south-facing window providing too much direct light, use sheer curtains or blinds to help diffuse it. Also, they should be given a spot with 50-70% humidity, which makes bathrooms and kitchens good locations, as these areas naturally retain more moisture in the air.
Best Spots to Grow Orchids
1. A Bright Windowsill
Phalaenopsis orchids (Moth Orchids) thrive in this setting as they prefer indirect but bright light and can adapt to indoor conditions with ease. You should avoid placing Cattleyas here, as they require more intense light.
The soft morning sunlight from an east-facing window will help with steady growth without the risk of sunburn. Here are ways to show them off on windowsills!
2. Filtered Light from South-Facing Window
South-facing windows provide plenty of light, which is excellent for many plants. However, too much direct sunlight can scorch delicate orchid leaves. You can use a sheer curtain or blinds or keep them at a slight distance from the window.
Cattleya orchids, which need more intense light, do well here if placed a bit back from direct sun exposure.
3. On a Bathroom Shelf
Place your orchid near a bathroom window where it receives filtered light, which will keep it healthy. Just ensure there is good air circulation to prevent mold. You can pair them up with these!
Not all Orchids will thrive here! However, Vanda orchids, which need high humidity and warm temperatures, thrive in this setting as bathrooms naturally provide the moisture they require.
4. A Kitchen Counter or Windowsill
Like bathrooms, kitchens are another ideal place for orchids (and these houseplants), as cooking and washing create extra humidity that orchids love, especially Miltoniopsis orchids (Pansy Orchids). Don’t keep them near heat sources like stoves, though.
5. In The Living Room
If your living room has a large window and gets plenty of natural light during the day, why not grow your orchid here? Dendrobium orchids flourish in bright light, which makes them ideal for living rooms.
You can pretty much create an orchid jungle this way!
6. On the Work Desk
An orchid can brighten up the workspace for those with a bright desk spot. Place this plant on your table, and it’ll thank you with gorgeous flowers! Better yet, why not try an orchid dish garden?
You can go for varieties like Miniature Phalaenopsis that are a great choice for a desk as they adapt well to lower light conditions and remain compact.
7. In the Bedroom
If your bedroom has a moderate light source, it can be an excellent place for an orchid. Use a tray filled with pebbles and water under the pot to maintain the required humidity level.
You can easily grow a Lady Slippers orchid at such a location, as they prefer low to medium light and do well in stable indoor temperatures.
8. Enclosed Balcony or Sunroom
A balcony with filtered light or a sunroom is also one of the best spots to grow orchids; just make sure they are shaded from the harsh afternoon sun. These balcony orchid gardens will inspire you!
9. As a Hanging Display
Orchids can be kept in hanging planters or mounted on driftwood near a bright window for a unique and space-saving option. Here are some ideas that will help you spruce up the decor with hanging orchids.
10. On The Shelves
Oncidium orchids (Dancing Lady Orchids) or our favorite Phalaenopsis are great choices for shelves with moderate light, as they adapt well to indoor conditions and bloom profusely. You can also make a lush indoor orchid garden! Here’s how you can get started!
