Most Common Succulent Growing Mistakes

1. Growing in Large Pots

One of the major errors that people administer is to plant succulents in an overly large pot; this increases the volume of soil around the plant, which traps excessive moisture, resulting in moist soil and root rot.

Succulents also have a shallow root system and they don’t need big pots. If you want to re-pot, it is always a good idea to transfer these plants to a pot that’s one size bigger than the existing one.

2. Treating Them As Indoor Plants

Though these plants can be a beautiful indoor addition, not all succulents tolerate low light like mother-in-law’s tongue; most of these plants do best when exposed to a combination of direct and indirect sunlight.

Failing to do so will result in leggy growth, droopy foliage, and faded colors. If you have a sunny window that gets bright light for most of the day, keeping these plants by it would be a great idea.

Avoid growing succulents in a window-less room at all costs.

3. Using Any Soil

Planting the succulents in regular garden soil is another fatal mistake committed by new gardeners. Growing medium from the yard can be highly compact, making it retain water, something succulents are not a fan of.

4. Watering Like Normal Plants

Many gardeners tend to water succulents like other plants, which is a BIG mistake. Native to the arid areas, the fleshy leaves of these plants hold extra water that can go for days.

Watering them frequently or every day can lead to root rot, thus inhibiting plant growth and death of the plant. The best bet is to let the soil go dry before you water them again.

5. Misting Succulents

Many gardeners confuse low watering for misting succulents. However, misting leads to the settling of water droplets on the leaf surface which further leads to leaf rot, mildew, and other fungal infestations.

6. Planting Succulents with Other Plants

Though planting different varieties together look inviting, it is wise not to grow succulents with other types of plants as each has a different growing requirement.

Other plants require more water and feeding; something succulents are not fond of. Growing other plants with succulents will result in their untimely death.

If you want, you can grow assorted succulents and cacti together but never the herbs, flowering plants, and succulents in the same pot.
