Secret Tips to Grow Lush Pothos Plant

1. Prune and Pinch

Secret Tips to Grow Lush Pothos Plant

To rejuvenate the growth of pothos plants, do some light pruning and pinching regularly. Take pruning shears and snip off the stems growing outwards and downwards. It will promote new growth. Make sure you always cut the vine just above or close to the leaf!

If you have a big plant, trimming a foot of length from it will make it lusher. For small plants, pinching the buds will do the trick.

Note: If the plant has become leggy and not showing new growth, trim back the stems either by pruning or pinching up to one or two nodes.

You can also keep the pothos in water. We have a great article on it here.

2. Clean the Leaves

To maintain the pothos plant’s glossy green foliage, keep its leaves dust-free by cleaning them once or twice a week. This will also help with photosynthesis as the plant will be able to absorb more light to grow properly.

3. Fertilize Your Plant

Pothos are not very fond of fertilizers, but they love to have them occasionally. If you want to stimulate growth, feed the plant with a general-purpose liquid fertilizer, diluted to a quarter of its recommended strength by the manufacturer, once in 6-8 weeks. Note: If you notice leaves burnt from the margins, this may be a sign of overfertilization.

4. Locate Pothos Wisely

While growing pothos indoors, place them in soft, indirect light. Better if the mild filtered sun kisses its leaves for some time during the day. Rotate the plant regularly, so each part receives enough exposure.

Note: While growing it outdoors, locate it in bright shade with the morning sun and avoid direct sun exposure in the afternoon at any cost.

5. Be Careful with Watering

Pothos is a low-maintenance indoor plant, but some people have been killing it. Mostly due to their kindness! By watering too often! Overwatering is the number one reason why this air-purifying houseplant dies, and the secret tip is not following a schedule when it comes to watering. Water it when it’s slightly dry!

Note: A key rule is to check the moisture by touching the soil. If it feels dry, then it’s time to water your pothos.

6. Use Epsom Salt

If you see the dull and yellowing leaves, it may be because of the lack of chlorophyll. You can make the pothos leaves greener and fuller by using Epsom salt, as it contains sulfur, which helps in chlorophyll production. Epsom salt also takes care of the magnesium deficiency that causes dead and brown spots on the foliage.

Tip: Mix a tablespoon of Epsom salt in a gallon of water and spray this on the leaves.

7. Keep it Warm

Pothos dislike cold drafts and chilly weather since it is a warm-climate plant, which is why it’s important to place it in a warm and bright spot. Also, keep it safe from sudden temperature fluctuations. The ideal temperature to keep it healthy is above 50 F (10 C).

Bonus Secret Tip for Growing Fuller Pothos

Want to make your pothos plant look fuller and lusher with green leaves? Just trim a few cuttings with at least leaves and root them in water or soil; once their roots emerge–plant them back in the same pot with the mother plant. Your plant will start to look bigger!
