Things You’ll Need:

• Sharp, clean pair of scissors or pruning shears
• A strip of foam (such as florist foam or Styrofoam)
• Clear glass or pot filled with water

Step 1: Choose a Healthy Plant

This trick works best on vining plants so you can use it to propagate plants like Pothos, Philodendron, English ivy, Sweet potato vine, Arrowhead vine, Hoya (Wax plant), Wandering Jew (Tradescantia), Grapevine, Jasmine, Passionflower, Clematis, Trumpet vine, Bougainvillea, Mandevilla, and Boston ivy.

Step 2: Cut 4-6 Inches Long Cuttings

Using a clean and sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears, cut 4-6 inches long stem cuttings. Make the cut just below a leaf node, which is where the leaf meets the stem.

Step 3: Prepare the Foam Strip

Cut a strip of foam that is long enough to secure the bottom of the cutting. A 2-inch broad and 5-6 inches long foam strip would do.

Tuck the cutting’s bottom in the foam strip and wrap it securely around the stem.

Step 4: Fill a Cup or Glass with water

Insert the foam strip in a glass or cup and fill it with non-chlorinated water.

Step 5: Provide the Right Growing Conditions

Place the glass or vase in a location that receives bright, indirect light. Change the water every week or so to ensure it stays fresh and clean.

Step 6: Wait for Roots to Grow

After a few weeks, you should start to see roots growing from the bottom of the stem. Once the roots are at least an inch long, you can remove the foam strip and place the stem in the soil to continue growing!
