The best way to propagate Moonshine Snake Plant is via division.

  • Pick a healthy plant with well-established roots.
  • Using a sharp knife, remove rhizome or offsets from the guardian plant. Make sure they have at least one leaf attached to them.
  • Let the division dry out for a day before you transplant it into a new pot.
  • Plant the offshoots in a well-draining soil mix, water well, and place the pot at a location where it gets bright, indirect sunlight.

You can also grow the plant from leaves. We have a detailed article on it here.

Growing Requirements of Moonshine Snake Plant

Location

Keeping the plant near an east-facing window will do wonders for its growth. This will also keep it safe from the harsh afternoon sun. Avoid keeping the plant in the shade as it will stunt its growth.

Soil

A well-draining growing medium will serve the best. You can also go for a potting mix designed for cactus and succulents. If you are using garden soil, make sure to add sand, peat, and gravel in equal quantities to it.

Watering

Being succulent, this plant doesn’t require much water to thrive. Water it only when the topsoil feels a bit dry to touch. Also, while watering the plant, avoid wetting the foliage.

Humidity

Snake plants can survive in a wide range of humidity levels. However, an ideal range for your snake plant would be anywhere between 40-50%. Keep it on a pebble tray filled with water or you can also use a humidifier.

Temperature

Hardy to USDA zones 10 through 11, these plants do well in warmer climates with temperatures ranging between 55-85 degrees Fahrenheit (13C-29 C). Sansevieria moonshine is winter hardy in regions where the temperature is lowest at 32° degrees Fahrenheit (0° C).

Fertilizer

Feeding your moonshine plants with a balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20, three to four times a year, would be more than enough to boost the growth. Spring and summer is the best time to fertilize. Also, don’t overfeed the plants and avoid fertilizing them in winters.

Re-potting

The plant is a fast grower and grows at a rapid pace as compared to the other Sansevieria varieties. Transplanting it into a new pot, that’s one size bigger than the old one, once in every 2-3 years, will keep it healthy and happy. Do make sure that you are using a fresh growing medium while transplanting.

Pests and Diseases

The plant is typically free from serious disease and pest problems. Just keep eye on mealybugs or spider mites. They can be knocked off using insecticidal soap. Also, avoid overwatering the plant to keep all the potential diseases at bay.

Toxicity

Sansevieria species contain compounds known as saponins. Upon ingestion, they may cause irritation in the stomach or in the mouth. Keep the plant out of reach from children and pets.
